Label design is a critical marketing tool that enables a product to stand out among other products on shelves and attract consumer attention. Research shows that 70 percent of consumers' purchasing decisions are made at the shelf, and label design plays a decisive role in this process.
1. Brand Identity and Consistency
Label design should be consistent with the brand's overall identity. Logo placement, corporate colors and typography should provide a consistent look across the entire product range. Inconsistent designs can undermine brand credibility.
2. Color Psychology
Colors directly affect consumer perception. Green evokes naturalness and health, blue evokes trust and professionalism, red evokes energy and passion, gold/yellow evokes premium quality. Choosing a color palette suitable for your target audience and product category is vital.
3. Typography and Readability
Text on the label should be easily readable from different distances. Eye-catching fonts should be preferred for headings, readable fonts for content texts. Minimum font size rules for legal information on food labels should be followed. As a general rule, using more than two font families on a single label should be avoided.
4. Material and Print Compatibility
The design should be compatible with the label material and printing method to be used. White underprinting needs on transparent labels, color reflection on metallic materials, and contrast differences on matte and glossy surfaces should be considered.
5. Information Hierarchy
Information on the label should be arranged in order of importance. The most important information (brand name or product name) should be the most prominent, supporting information (weight, content, barcode) should be in secondary position. The use of white space allows the design to breathe and gives a professional appearance.
6. Die Cut and Size
The size and shape of the label should be proportional to the packaging it will be applied to. The most suitable form for the character of the product should be determined among rectangular, oval, round or custom die-cut options. Safe zone and bleed should be taken into account during design.
7. Pre-Press Preparation
PDF or AI should be preferred as file format, resolution should be minimum 300 DPI. Color mode should be set to CMYK, Pantone codes should be specified for special colors. Texts should be converted to outlines and bleed should be at least 2mm.
